What thermography reveals
A thermographic survey uses a thermal camera to identify abnormal temperature patterns in operating electrical equipment. It provides a non-contact way to find developing risk that may not be visible during an ordinary inspection.
Why electrical equipment heats up
Incorrectly tightened connections, underrated equipment and poor fitment can create high-resistance points from installation. Connections, joints and contacts can also deteriorate through normal service.
Increased resistance produces heat. If the condition continues, it can accelerate deterioration and lead to failure, fire or a more serious incident.
How a survey is completed
A suitably equipped electrical technician scans accessible operating equipment while using the PPE and procedures required for the task. General enclosure scans are supplemented with closer images of suspected hot spots.
The observations are recorded in a report that identifies the equipment surveyed, highlights anomalies and recommends the next investigation or corrective action.
The maintenance value
Regular surveys can find problems before component failure interrupts the operation. Trendable reports also demonstrate that the business is inspecting its electrical infrastructure and acting on identified defects.
Thermography works best as one part of a planned maintenance programme rather than a stand-alone guarantee of condition.
