Compare whole-of-life cost, not only purchase price
Imported machines, packaged plant, control panels and switchboards can have an attractive initial price. The saving can disappear when the equipment does not suit the process, cannot be supported locally or requires rectification before use.
A useful procurement review considers installation, commissioning, operation, support, spares and compliance alongside the supplier quote.
Control logic must fit the real process
Vendor-designed sequences may assume a workflow that differs from the end user’s operation. Gaps often appear where automated and manual stages meet, creating extra labour, slower throughput or awkward workarounds.
Define the required process, interfaces, alarms, operating modes and performance expectations before ordering the package.
Check product life cycle and local support
Low-cost equipment may use PLCs or control components that are already obsolete or approaching end of support. Confirm the product life cycle, software availability, spare-part lead times and who can assist locally after commissioning.
Without that support, a minor breakdown or logic change can become a long outage.
Verify Australian requirements before delivery
Imported electrical equipment still needs to meet the Australian requirements that apply to its design and installation. Rectification after arrival can add substantial cost and delay.

Use a clear design brief and scope of work
Importing can still be the right decision when requirements are explicit. A design brief gives vendors and installers the same technical baseline, supports like-for-like pricing and reduces scope gaps during installation.
Include functional requirements, nominated standards, documentation, testing, local support, spares and acceptance criteria before going to market.
